Current Projects
County Line Cemetery Revitalization. We are assisting in the revitalization of County Line Cemetery. We are focused on the restoring enslaved persons and freedmen burial section immediately to the East of the cemetery. The community effort includes the Lee County Cemetery Preservation Commission, Mountain Springs Baptist Church, the Boy Scouts of America, the Lee County Sheriff's Office, Tomb N' Groom cemetery restoration services, and family members of those interred.
Writing Biographies at Baptist Hill Cemetery. Each semester we identify individuals interred at Baptist Hill Cemetery and use documents found on genealogical websites, online, in newspapers, and at courthouses to write interpretive biographies of their lives.
Establishing a Cemetery Association. We are currently trying to establish a cemetery association made up of members of the community to help make decisions regarding old African American cemeteries in Lee County.
Lynching Justice Initiative. We are also supporting an initiative to start a community discussion about those lynched in Lee County.
