Mary Mitchell
Mary Mitchell was a good neighbor of Auburn, Alabama and was smart despite only having a 5th grade education. Marry Mitchell was born around 1876 and married William Mitchell on March 23rd, 1898, and had one daughter named Willie Mae Clark. Her brother Ned lived with them in 1910, then later on her brother-in-law lived with them in 1920. Mary was the daughter of Fannie McDougnald and had two sisters-in-law named Carrie Burbridge and Pearl Mitchell. William and Mary rented to people such as Charlie who lived with them in 1940 as a boarder. Mary and William’s house was valued at 1,500 dollars, worth almost twice the value of others in the neighborhood. Mary and her daughter did help on the farm when her husband is busy, but it is unknown if Willie Mae Mitchell actually went to school or stayed at the house to help with farm work. It is also unclear if Willie Mae Mitchell went to school or was self-taught at home with her parents. After her husband died, Mary became a service worker, seamstress and a cook. Mary Mitchell died on March 10, 1959, at the age of 86, buried next to her husband, who died in 1948, in Baptist Hill Cemetery.
